National-level race ace Mirza Syahmi Mahzan will make his debut in the Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival which will begin it’s third season, in Terengganu on the 6 – 7 September 2019. Syahmi 22, who is part of Moda Machine Racing Team drivers will compete in the Toyota Vios Challenge for the full season of the series competing in the Sporting Category of the popular one-make race series.
Syahmi has competed in various cars and classes since 2016, mainly in the Malaysia Speed Festival (MSF) and Malaysia Championship Series (MCS), and has rose the ranks rather swiftly with the youngster finishing his season’s best when he and his teammate Syahrizal Jamaludin secured a close third overall position in the 2018 Race Car 1600 class of the MSF championship with F Tuned Suspension Racing Team.
While he has a lot of experience in front wheel drive race cars, his start in the Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival will be his most high-profile motorsport challenge in his career. Juggling between his studies and racing, the UNITEN Mechanical Engineering student is looking forward to his debut, even though it’s going to be a journey into unknown territory.
“I’ve followed the Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival for a few years now and it’s a one-make race series that I’ve always wanted to do,” said Mirza Syahmi. “My background has always been racing with front wheel drive cars and I think I would acclimatize with the Toyota Vios rather quickly. The only difference is that most of the races would be held on a street course with not much run-off areas, so I expect that would be a new challenge for me, along with racing amongst other guys on the grid driving similar cars. Realistically, my target is to finish the race unscathed and perhaps be in the top five or a podium finish as there’s a lot of strong competition. So I really want to take as much out of each race meet as possible and progress from there on,” said Syahmi.
The Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival 2019 will begin it’s third season in Terengganu on the 6 – 7 September and will feature three race categories being the Super Sporting, Sporting and Promotion Class with the latter featuring several celebrities.
